The Stiletto Defense
Remember the first time you put on a pair of stilettos? They looked so sexy while you were sitting in the chair, strapping them on. Then, you stood up and tried to walk. Perhaps you fell back into the chair or knocked over a shoe display as you crashed into a floor. Or, perhaps you just looked like an idiot, crossing the floor as slow as a snail with your arms stretched out for extra balance. No matter what happened, you quickly learned that stiletto wearing takes a lot of practice and skill.
Apparently, police officers in the Southern U.S. weren’t aware of the impact stilettos can have on a woman’s walk and balance. With a client facing DWI charges, one woman’s lawyer used a “stiletto defense”. He argued that no woman could pass a site sobriety test while wearing the three inch stiletto heels his client had on. The woman was asked by police officers to perform such acts as walking a straight line and standing on one foot for thirty seconds. These, whether sober or intoxicated, are difficult acts for anyone wearing stilettos. I guess police officers will now have to pay attention to shoe apparel before putting anyone through a sobriety test.
